The 4th of July is a time for celebration, fireworks, and fun. But for our furry friends, it can be a stressful and frightening experience. As a dog owner, it's important to take the time to ensure your dog not only feels safe and calm, but is safe and calm during the festivities. Here at Room for Paws, we truly care about each and every dog, and we have some tips to help you keep your pup stress-free during the holiday!

Tucker Them Out with Plenty of Playtime

One of the best ways to help your dog relax during the 4th of July is to tire them out during the day. Engage your dog in lots of playtime and physical activity. Whether it's a game of fetch, a long walk or leashed hike, or some quality time in a fenced in yard, keeping your dog active will help them feel more relaxed and ready to rest in the evening when the fireworks start.

Similarly, enriching activities, such as training and familiarization, can be a great way to help your dog handle stressful situations. The earlier you start training the better, however, don't let the adage fool you—you can teach an old dog new tricks!

Create a Calm, Secure Environment

You might think it would be better to keep your pup with you, but bringing your dog along to the fireworks display can be overwhelming and frightening for them. It's best to leave them at home in a secure environment where they cannot run away due to their perceived threat from the loud noises.

In the days leading up to the festivities, create a safe and calm space for your dog. This could be a quiet room in your house, away from windows, where the noise of fireworks is less intense. Introduce your pup to it so that it feels like a safe, familiar space to them. On the day of, make sure your pup is in their secure space before leaving. Don't forget to give them their favorite toy, or one of your t-shirts for extra comfort!
