If you've visited Connecticut before, or even it's your first time, the Constitution State has something special for everyone. Whether you're here for a day or a week, you'll find no shortage of things to explore. Need some inspiration? Don't worry, we've got you covered with some key things to do (and places to visit!) when visiting Connecticut this summer.
Family-Friendly Activities and Attractions
When we say "family-friendly," we mean it – these spots all have something that everyone, no matter what their age is, can enjoy:
- Lake Compounce in Bristol: America's oldest amusement park has rides, a water park, and a kiddie park. It also offers a beach with cabanas and a dog-friendly campground.
- Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk: This riverside aquarium has an array of interactive exhibits and seasonal catamaran tours.
- Mystic Aquarium in Mystic: This aquarium is the only place in New England with beluga whales and one of the few places in the U.S. to see Steller sea lions!
Tip: Just a stone's throw from the aquarium is Olde Mystick Village, a dog-friendly Colonial-style shopping and dining retreat.
Dogs aren't allowed inside Lake Compounce or either aquarium (with the exception of service dogs).
Famous Connecticut Food Spots
Connecticut is the birthplace of many of our favorite foods, so while you're here, be sure to check out iconic spots such as:
- Louis' Lunch in New Haven: The original home of the hamburger, serving burgers the traditional way, grilled in their original vertical broilers.
- Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana in New Haven: Renowned since 1925 for its coal-fired Neapolitan style pizzas—particularly the iconic white clam pizza—and known locally as, "apizza."
Tip: If you're looking for a place to stop for some road trip snacks or to pack a cooler for the beach, make sure you check out the iconic Connecticut grocery store, Stew Leonard's!
Dogs are not allowed inside these restaurants (with the exception of service animals).
Top Scenic Outdoor Exploration (And Relaxation!) Spots in Southern Connecticut
Connecticut has no shortage of sprawling state parks, hiking trails, and beaches. Some of our favorites include:
- Cove Island Park in Stamford
- Sherwood Island State Park in Westport (Connecticut's first state park!)
- Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison
- Compo Beach in Westport
These parks have everything from hiking, sandy beaches, recreation areas, and even camping! Most parks and beaches are open from dusk to dawn during the summer season. Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed (with the exception of service dogs) on the beaches or in the parks from April 1st to September 30th – however, always check ahead of time for each specific spot!
